Rosenior's Chelsea Deal Hinges on Strasbourg Finding His Successor

Chelsea have terminated Enzo Maresca's tenure as head coach, with the relationship between manager and boardroom deemed beyond repair. The decision comes after weeks of escalating friction, during which Maresca publicly criticised the club's hierarchy for insufficient backing.

The deterioration accelerated amid Chelsea's shocking form—just one victory in their last seven outings—whilst speculation mounted over Maresca's interest in a move to Manchester City.

Liam Rosenior now stands as the clear favourite to fill the vacancy at Stamford Bridge. The former Hull City manager has earned considerable respect during his time at Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 outfit owned by Chelsea's BlueCo parent company.

However, according to Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol, one significant hurdle remains. Rosenior's appointment hinges on Strasbourg identifying and securing an adequate replacement. The French club face Nice on Saturday as the Ligue 1 season resumes following the winter break.

Solhekol also confirmed that four managerial names are definitively off Chelsea's radar: Oliver Glasner, Cesc Fabregas, Andoni Iraola, and Roberto De Zerbi will not be appointed.

Rosenior has previously rebuffed advances from other clubs. He turned down Nottingham Forest, whilst he rejected Bayer Leverkusen on two occasions—once before and once after Erik ten Hag's appointment at Manchester United.

The circumstances surrounding Maresca's exit have proven contentious. During Sky Sports' coverage of Liverpool versus Leeds United on Thursday evening, Chelsea briefed the broadcaster with allegations against their departed manager.

According to the club's account, Maresca had clashed with the medical department over injury protocols on numerous occasions, allegedly overruling advice and playing injured players beyond recommended timescales—a decision that contributed to re-injuries this season.

Chelsea also made clear their displeasure that Maresca held discussions with Manchester City and Juventus from October onwards. The club viewed these conversations—despite being informed of them—as disrespectful.

The briefing further suggested Maresca's absence from media duties on Tuesday was not illness-related, as previously understood. Most damaging was Chelsea's characterisation of their former manager as lacking both mental fortitude and emotional maturity.
