Cucurella's Barcelona Temptation Masks Deeper Chelsea Frustration, Says Romano

Now Marc Cucurella has joined Enzo Fernandez in publicly criticising the club's direction, specifically targeting BlueCo's transfer policy and the decisions affecting the manager's position.

Speaking after Chelsea's 8-2 aggregate elimination by Paris Saint-Germain, Cucurella laid bare his concerns about the strategy of exclusively targeting young talent. "I understand this is the club's policy and their chosen direction — acquiring young players with an eye on the future," he explained. "But for those of us still here wanting to win silverware, that stings.

"We possess a strong group of players. The building blocks are solid. Yet winning the Premier League or Champions League demands more. Focusing solely on youth recruitment could hinder those ambitions. Against PSG, we were short on players with that high-level experience.

"Development takes time, and these young talents will gain that experience eventually. But you must strike the right balance between the two approaches."

Fabrizio Romano has now offered insight into Cucurella's comments, particularly regarding speculation linking him with a Barcelona return. According to the transfer guru, the left-back's remarks represent something more calculated than mere grumbling.

When quizzed about Barcelona at a press conference, Cucurella acknowledged the emotional pull of his former club. "If Barcelona come calling, that's a difficult proposition to turn down," he admitted, before stressing his current focus remains entirely on Chelsea.

In a subsequent Athletic interview, Cucurella expanded on his frustrations. He expressed regret over Maresca's mid-season sacking, believing such decisions should have been deferred until the campaign's conclusion. He also reiterated that the squad possesses quality but requires greater experience and balance, particularly in demanding fixtures like the PSG encounter.

Romano emphasised these aren't complaints designed to undermine Chelsea, but rather a dressing-room leader making his position known. "Cucurella feels responsible and wants to drive this project forward," Romano explained. "He's a shrewd operator who chooses his words with purpose."
