The South American star finds himself at the centre of a simmering dispute in the Spanish capital. Tensions with manager Xabi Alonso have been simmering for months, punctuated by a particularly explosive moment during October's El Clasico clash with Barcelona. Substituted by Alonso, Vinicius Junior cut a visibly frustrated figure as he departed the pitch, reportedly declaring: "Me? Coach? Coach, me? It's always me. I'm leaving the team. It's better I leave."

While an apology swiftly followed, the incident raised eyebrows about whether his long-term future lay elsewhere. The situation has been further complicated by contract negotiations that have ground to a halt. The 24-year-old is chasing fresh terms that would align his wages with those of Kylian Mbappe, and Real Madrid's reluctance to meet those demands has created a standoff.

In 23 appearances across all competitions this season, Vinicius Junior has chipped in with five goals and seven assists—a return that underscores his importance to the club's ambitions.

Back in November, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported a "complete breakdown" in talks, with Real Madrid subsequently "open to a sale." According to sources close to the Madrid dressing room, the tension between player and coach had become so acute that observers considered it "very difficult to imagine Vinícius still at Madrid next season." The club had apparently set an asking price of €150 million.

The Guardian's Will Unwin now reports that Chelsea, fresh from appointing a new manager, are actively plotting their move. With Vinicius Junior's contract running until June 2027, the Londoners see a window of opportunity—acquire him now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in 18 months.

Yet the narrative grows murkier still. Spanish outlet Defensa Central claims the Brazilian has privately assured Real Madrid president Florentino Perez of his commitment, telling the club chief "which team he wants to play for"—and it appears that team is Real Madrid. Sources suggest Vinicius Junior "continues to insist behind closed doors that he wants to stay at the club for many more years," with Perez reportedly "obsessed with securing his contract renewal."

Not everyone believes Chelsea's pursuit will bear fruit either. El Chiringuito's Marcos Benito has dismissed the prospect entirely, pointing out a rather obvious obstacle: "Chelsea is not an option for Vinícius Júnior. They cannot afford his wages."
