Murphy Sees Palmer as Fernandes Successor at United, but Rosenior Rubbishes Talk

Cole Palmer's injury-plagued season at Chelsea has not stopped speculation linking the 23-year-old with a move away from west London, with former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy now openly discussing a potential switch to Manchester United.

Murphy believes Palmer could succeed Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford, particularly if the Portuguese captain departs for Saudi Arabia this summer. The ex-Liverpool man suggested that Palmer's long-standing affection for United—the club he supported as a boy from his native Wythenshawe—combined with the right circumstances, could make such a transfer conceivable.

"The way football works, if you're a player of that quality and you've always had a love for a particular club, it's not a huge stretch to imagine things lining up," Murphy told BestBettingSites. "Especially if United were to go on a run. A lot of Chelsea fans think the club is more of a business than a football project, so could I see Cole Palmer leaving for Manchester United? Yes, I could. I wouldn't want it to happen, but I could see it. Bruno Fernandes needs a successor."

Recent reports have claimed Palmer feels unsettled at Stamford Bridge and would welcome a return to the North West, though a reunion with Manchester City has been ruled out unless Guardiola departs. The England international is said to be open to a "sensational transfer" back to his boyhood club.

Yet Murphy also acknowledged Chelsea's contractual position provides a strong hand. When questioned whether Champions League qualification would be essential to retaining Palmer, he suggested the club's long-term deal offers security regardless: "No, because they've got him under a long-term contract, so they can keep him either way. But qualifying for the Champions League would make it much easier to quieten the noise around other clubs trying to get him."

Palmer has endured a frustrating campaign with injuries limiting him to 14 appearances and five goals, though his underlying quality remains undeniable. Since arriving from Manchester City in 2023 for £40m, the 23-year-old has accumulated 41 goals and 19 assists across 82 Premier League matches.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, however, has dismissed the speculation entirely, describing the notion of Palmer departing as "so unrealistic." Speaking at a press conference, Rosenior insisted there is nothing substantive behind the rumours: "It's come from nowhere. There's nothing in it. There's no reason to have the conversation."

He added: "Cole is very happy. I've had numerous conversations with him. Our thoughts are on how we can make this team better, how he can improve and how I can help him. He loves being here and he wants to be a Chelsea player. You can't stop speculation, but some speculation is so far from the truth."

Rosenior also suggested the timing of such reports was predictable following his recent appointment: "I'm not surprised at the timing. A new manager comes in and all of a sudden there's people unsettled. It's not true. Cole's here, he's very happy and I can't wait to see him back on the pitch."
