Alonso Eyes Mainoo as Chelsea's Opening Move, but United Hold All the Cards

Xabi Alonso's arrival at Chelsea on July 1 will come with significant transfer influence, and it appears the former Bayer Leverkusen manager has already identified his priority target: Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo.

The incoming Blues boss, tasked with revitalising a side that has fallen well short of title contention and missed the top five this season, is keen to add the England international to his squad when the transfer window opens. BlueCo's faith in Alonso comes with a promise of recruitment say-so, and the former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder is reportedly wasting no time in making his ambitions clear.

According to reports, Alonso's specification for his first Chelsea signing is remarkably precise. He's not hunting a defensive destroyer or a creative playmaker, but rather a tireless box-to-box runner with the work ethic and pressing intensity that Granit Xhaka demonstrated during Alonso's time at Leverkusen. Mainoo's profile fits that bill perfectly, and sources suggest Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers has also been discussed as an alternative attacking option.

The 21-year-old midfielder has already spent time on Chelsea's radar, with the club making enquiries about a permanent deal last season. They reportedly tabled a £40million offer, but Mainoo showed no interest in swapping Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge at that point.

The landscape has shifted considerably since then. Under Ruben Amorim's initial management, Mainoo struggled to make an impression, but the arrival of Michael Carrick in January transformed his fortunes. The youngster has since become integral to United's midfield, establishing himself as a regular starter and signing fresh terms in late April.

Those words suggest little chance of Mainoo entertaining a move to west London anytime soon. United, having finally unlocked the midfielder's potential, have little incentive to sell, and the player himself appears firmly committed to the project at Old Trafford. Alonso's ambitions may be clear, but the reality of prying Mainoo away looks considerably more complicated.
