Chelsea's Seven Untouchables Spell Double Blow for Man Utd's Summer Plans

Man Utd's hopes of raiding Chelsea for reinforcements this summer have taken a significant hit, with the west London club drawing a firm line in the sand over their prize assets.

The Athletic's Simon Johnson has revealed that Chelsea consider seven players completely non-negotiable as they plot their rebuild following a catastrophic 2025/26 campaign. The disastrous season, which saw both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior lose their jobs, culminated in a tenth-place finish and no European football for next term.

That lack of continental competition had sparked speculation about potential departures, particularly with Man Utd circling. The Red Devils have been sniffing around both Cole Palmer and Josh Acheampong, with the former attracting particular attention regarding a possible summer bid.

Those hopes can now be filed away. Palmer and Acheampong are both locked firmly into Chelsea's untouchables bracket, alongside Reece James, Moises Caicedo, Levi Colwill, Estevao Willian, and Joao Felix. The seven-man list effectively closes the door on any Chelsea raid for United's transfer chiefs.

Intriguingly, the compilation reveals as much through omission as inclusion. The exclusion of Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella—two of the club's longest-serving players—suggests their futures remain considerably more uncertain despite their seniority within the squad.

Cucurella has also been linked with a move to Man Utd, though transfer expert Fabrizio Romano indicates a Spanish return remains far more probable. Romano suggests that while Chelsea remain in control of any negotiations and would demand a substantial offer, a move back to his homeland represents the likeliest scenario should the defender depart.

Interest from Spanish clubs appears more concrete than any English alternatives, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid monitoring the situation. Barcelona's pursuit, however, appears complicated by Alejandro Balde's presence in their squad, while Atletico have long admired Cucurella and maintain him on their watchlist.

As for incoming business, Chelsea are actively pursuing a minimum of two summer signings capable of making immediate contributions. Centre-back and a versatile attacking player top their shopping list, with three or four targets already under consideration. The club remains aware that World Cup fixtures could influence the timing and completion of deals.
