Chelsea Move Fastest in Vlahovic Chase as Juventus Confirm Striker's Summer Exit

Dusan Vlahovic's departure from Juventus is now official—and Chelsea have moved with purpose to position themselves at the front of a lengthy queue of suitors.

The 26-year-old will become available on a free transfer this summer after contract negotiations between player and club reached an impasse. Juventus made the announcement on Wednesday, ending months of speculation about whether the Serbia international might pen fresh terms in Turin.

Vlahovic arrived at the Old Lady in January 2022 for €70m, when Arsenal were also circling, fresh from a prolific spell at Fiorentina where he'd plundered 38 goals in eighteen months. His return in Italy has been steady rather than spectacular—68 goals across 168 appearances—but at no cost this summer, he represents one of Europe's most tantalising opportunities.

The Blues have already made their move, establishing contact with Vlahovic's representatives and moving further down the line than any rival. While Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Everton have all sounded out the striker's camp this week, Chelsea's groundwork proves decisive. The west London club have monitored Vlahovic throughout his time in Serie A and maintained dialogue consistently.

With a new number nine high on Chelsea's agenda and a proven goalscorer suddenly obtainable without a transfer fee, the alignment appears fortuitous for Todd Boehly's project.

The wage question

Money remains the obstacle. Juventus director Giorgio Chiellini pointed to salary demands as the reason negotiations collapsed. "I am very sad, he cared about Juve right up to the last minute," Chiellini said following the announcement. "He is a serious professional. With these figures, he won't remain in Italy, so it is only fair and legitimate that he is seeking a different type of salary."

Reports suggest Vlahovic sought €8m annually plus an identical signing-on fee—figures that would have stretched even Juventus's resources.

Intermediaries are currently testing the market across Europe, with the Saudi Pro League among those expressing interest. Yet Vlahovic's preference remains European football, and Chelsea's financial muscle and proven ability to compete at the continent's highest level may prove decisive.

Atletico Madrid have also emerged as serious contenders, evaluating contingency options as they monitor Julian Alvarez's situation. Still, it is Chelsea who hold the advantage as this particular race develops.
