Chelsea Make Shock Move for Al-Ahli Manager Jaissle as Rosenior Era Ends

Chelsea have taken the first steps towards an eyebrow-raising appointment, establishing contact with Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle as they plot their managerial succession following Liam Rosenior's departure.

The Blues confirmed the departure of their former Hull City and Strasbourg boss on Wednesday evening, with the club having suffered five consecutive Premier League defeats without finding the back of the net. The setback leaves Chelsea languishing seven points adrift of Liverpool in the Champions League spots, occupying fifth position with an FA Cup semi-final showdown against Leeds looming on Sunday.

Calum McFarlane will assume caretaker duties for a second spell this season as the club embarks on what BlueCo described as a thorough "process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment."

The managerial search appears to cast a wide net, with journalist Ben Jacobs flagging ten potential candidates—among them Julian Nagelsmann, Andoni Iraola, and Luis Enrique. Yet according to TEAMtalk, Jaissle has emerged as a surprise frontrunner, with preliminary groundwork already underway.

The 38-year-old Austrian, like Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp, and Oliver Glasner before him, operates within the Ralf Rangnick coaching philosophy. Many have earmarked him as Nagelsmann's spiritual successor, though Jaissle has been reluctant to embrace such comparisons.

His pedigree reads impressively: 64 victories from 92 matches at RB Salzburg, two Austrian championships to his name, and a shock switch to Saudi Arabia in 2023. Most recently, he delivered the AFC Champions League trophy to Al-Ahli last season. According to reports, Jaissle is now receptive to a European return, with Chelsea particularly drawn to his progressive methodology and systematic approach to coaching structures.

Meanwhile, the Blues have also initiated contact with Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, per French outlet RMC Sport. The Spaniard will become available this summer after rebuffing extension proposals from the Cherries and has been identified as a leading candidate for the Stamford Bridge position.

Ironically, Bournemouth moved above Chelsea into seventh place following a 2-2 draw against Leeds on Wednesday. When pressed on speculation surrounding a potential move to west London, Iraola remained circumspect.

"No, I think I said it when I announced I was not continuing here," he stated. "For me, now, it's about Bournemouth. Four games. We have an incredible position, an incredible fight ahead. This past week, you were asking me about other clubs. I don't know exactly which ones, but also, as a sign of respect for Bournemouth, I cannot talk right now about my future because it's not what worries the Bournemouth supporters."
