Gerrard Hails Pedro as Chelsea's Game-Changer in FA Cup Semi-Final Victory

Chelsea have booked their ticket to the FA Cup final after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday, with Steven Gerrard pinpointing one man as the architect of their resurgence.

Enzo Fernandez's close-range header in the opening period proved decisive, firing the Blues past a stubborn Leeds side and into a May 16 showdown with Manchester City at the national stadium.

The win marked a significant turning point for Chelsea following their managerial upheaval. Liam Rosenior's departure came after a disastrous run that saw the club lose five consecutive Premier League matches and seven in eight outings across all competitions. Calum McFarlane stepped into the breach on a temporary basis whilst the club searches for a permanent replacement.

McFarlane's first match reaped immediate rewards, particularly through the restored availability of Brazilian forward Joao Pedro. The £60m signing from Brighton, who arrived last summer, delivered a masterclass in centre-forward play that caught the eye of both analysts and former players alike.

Gerrard, speaking on TNT Sports, lavished praise on Pedro's performance. "He was a great focal point today. He's a lovely mover with the ball," the Liverpool legend noted. "I think Chelsea look a different team with him in and he made a big difference today."

The former Reds skipper highlighted a telling moment in the second half when a Cucurella cross arrived at neck height—a difficult proposition for most strikers. "His first touch was absolutely beautiful," Gerrard observed, underscoring Pedro's technical quality.

Joe Cole, who knows a thing or two about playing in the Chelsea shirt, echoed those sentiments. The former midfielder was particularly impressed by Pedro's versatility in the role. "He plays with that flair, I loved him today—he was dropping off into the pockets," Cole explained. "He did his centre forward job, he held up the play and when he got into good positions he was picking the right passes."

Cole stressed how Pedro's presence transformed Chelsea's balance. "He's been out the team and we've looked a bit off it. When he's in the team it's so much more balanced," he added, noting that Leeds struggled to contain the Brazilian's movement. "They didn't know whether to go with him when he got into the pockets or when he ran in behind. He was such a problem for Leeds and when he's on song you can see the influence."

Chelsea's goalkeeper Robert Sanchez also reflected on the significance of the result. After making two crucial saves to keep Leeds at bay, Sanchez spoke of the mood within the camp. "It's amazing. The boys reacted in the way they should have," he said. "We've tried to keep everyone positive in training and it's the chance to be in another final. It's something we've been working for and it's amazing."

With four Premier League fixtures remaining before the May 16 final, Sanchez emphasised the importance of finishing the season strongly. "I'm very happy about the season I've had but it's about ending it on a high," he concluded.
