Sherwood Slams Fernandez Theatrics as Chelsea Collapse to Brighton

Chelsea's top-four ambitions took another significant blow on Tuesday evening as Brighton ran riot at the Amex, securing a comprehensive 3-0 victory courtesy of strikes from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, and Danny Welbeck.

The defeat proved particularly damaging in the standings, with the Blues tumbling to seventh place and now sitting seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool in the race for Champions League football. With qualification looking increasingly unlikely, the pressure continues to mount on Liam Rosenior's struggling outfit.

Adding to the club's woes, Fernandez has recently returned to action following his involvement in a separate controversy. The midfielder faced disciplinary action after his agent Javier Pastore fielded questions regarding a potential move to Real Madrid. Pastore subsequently clarified the situation, explaining that Fernandez had merely been asked which European city he might wish to reside in one day.

"Enzo didn't understand the situation," Pastore explained. "When the coach told him, he accepted it because he's a highly professional guy who's always fully committed wherever he is and respects decisions."

The agent went on to defend his client's remarks, stating that Fernandez had simply referenced Madrid due to the language similarities with his native Buenos Aires, alongside cultural and climatic factors. "But we don't understand the punishment because he doesn't mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it," Pastore insisted.

Following an apology during the international break, Fernandez returned to the starting lineup against Brighton. However, his performance and subsequent behaviour have now drawn scathing criticism from Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood.

Sherwood took particular issue with Fernandez's demeanour towards the away supporters after the final whistle, when the midfielder stood before the Chelsea fans with an apparent shrug and outstretched arms.

"He wanted to make a show," Sherwood declared. "This is not someone who I wanted to see with an armband on. He wants to leave the club. He stuck his chest out, he stood there, he made a stand, mate, make a stand when the game is on, do something about it, lead your players."

The former Tottenham boss continued his assessment with characteristic bluntness, suggesting Fernandez's individualistic approach runs counter to what the club requires. "You're an individual who plays for himself," Sherwood added. "He's probably there talking to the coaching staff trying to blame everyone else around him, that ain't what leaders do, they galvanise their teammates, they make sure they're organised."

Sherwood's critique extended beyond the Argentine midfielder, encompassing the broader malaise afflicting the Chelsea squad. He highlighted deficiencies across the backline, naming Marc Cucurella, Reece James, Moises Caicedo, Renato Veiga, and Robert Sanchez as players falling short of required standards.

"They need experienced players, not only in age but who have played a lot of games and know the Premier League," Sherwood concluded. "I want to see leaders on that team like the Chelsea of old. This is not Chelsea Football Club, it's nothing like I recognise from a Chelsea Football Club... terrible."

The timing of Fernandez's latest controversy coincides with reports suggesting that Jurgen Klopp has identified the midfielder as one of five priority targets should he accept the Real Madrid position.
