Chelsea Plot Centre-Back Raid as Rennes Star Jacquet Deal Stalls Over Fee

Chelsea's pursuit of defensive reinforcement has hit a familiar stumbling block: money. The Blues have their sights set on Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, a target who has also caught Arsenal's attention, but a significant valuation gap threatens to derail the move entirely.

Manager Liam Rosenior's squad lacks the elite centre-back options required to mount a serious tilt at the Premier League and European honours. While Chelsea boast promising young talent across the pitch, their defensive vulnerabilities and goalkeeping concerns remain obstacles to genuine title contention. Rather than wait until summer, the club has accelerated their plans to bolster the backline this month.

The Blues have already moved ahead of their London rivals in the race for Jacquet's signature, with the player having put pen to paper on personal terms. That's where the good news ends, however. Rennes and Chelsea remain poles apart on price, with negotiations currently deadlocked.

According to the latest intelligence, Rennes initially valued their 25-year-old at €70 million (£61 million). Chelsea countered with offers hovering around €45 million, with add-ons potentially pushing the total to €55 million (approximately £48 million). The French club has already rebuffed a €50 million proposal and is now holding out for closer to €80 million—roughly £67-68 million.

European football specialist Andy Brassell has outlined precisely why Jacquet fits Chelsea's profile. "He's totally in the zone of what Chelsea want," Brassell told talkSPORT. "He's physically imposing, incredibly athletic, and his technical ability on the ball has come on leaps and bounds, particularly during his loan spell at Clermont."

Brassell's analysis reveals the thinking behind Chelsea's strategy: the club would rather invest in players with genuine long-term potential—those not yet at their peak but capable of reaching elite status—than splash out on established stars. Jacquet, despite his obvious quality, sits comfortably within that bracket.

The sticking point remains the eye-watering fee Rennes are demanding. Top Premier League clubs now routinely face such valuations, yet Chelsea's recruitment philosophy increasingly favours calculated gambles on emerging talent over marquee signings. Whether they'll stretch to Rennes' asking price remains to be seen.
