Chelsea Lock In Barco Deal as Cucurella Heads to Real Madrid

Real Madrid have moved swiftly to complete the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for approximately £52m, a deal that suits all parties involved. The transfer brings an end to the left-back's time at Stamford Bridge following a disappointing campaign that saw the club miss out on European qualification.

Cucurella's exit was hardly a shock given Chelsea's failure to secure a European berth, though the 26-year-old had proven himself as one of the club's more reliable performers during a frustrating 2025/26 season. The Spanish defender had been vocal about his concerns regarding the club's direction before his departure.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Cucurella expressed a wish to return to Spain for personal and family reasons, prompting Chelsea to facilitate his exit. The fee of €55m plus €5m in add-ons was deemed satisfactory by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy. The development of Jorrel Hato last season also factored into the club's decision to sanction the sale.

Chelsea have already moved to address the left-back position. The Athletic reports that Strasbourg's Valentin Barco is set to arrive at Stamford Bridge, with sources in France suggesting the deal is already in place. The 21-year-old Argentine offers the versatility Chelsea desire, capable of operating as a left-back, wing-back, or midfielder. Barco has already confirmed his departure from the Ligue 1 outfit.

The west Londoners are targeting two or three immediate reinforcements to bolster their first-team squad. Beyond Barco's arrival, Chelsea are prioritising a centre-back and a versatile attacking option as they look to bounce back from their European absence. The club are determined to recruit players capable of competing at Premier League level from day one.
