Carragher Reckons Delap Erred Joining Chelsea: "The Jump Was Too Big"

Jamie Carragher has laid into Liam Delap's decision to join Chelsea, insisting the young striker made the wrong call when he swapped Ipswich Town for Stamford Bridge last summer.

The Reds legend pulled no punches on the latest Stick to Football podcast, suggesting the £30m transfer represented a misstep for the 23-year-old England Under-21 international. Delap has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth at the Blues since arriving from Portman Road, managing just four league starts since the New Year.

Across all competitions this campaign, the former Manchester City academy product has featured in 23 matches but started only 11 of them—nine of those in the Premier League alone.

Carragher reckoned Delap needed to take a more measured path up the ladder rather than attempting such a significant leap in one bound. "It was a bad move going to Chelsea," he explained. "When young players are developing and improving, sometimes the jump from Ipswich to Chelsea is simply too steep. He needed a club in between—somewhere like Everton, where a centre forward plays every week and knows he'll stay in the side even after a dodgy game or two."

The pundit added: "At Chelsea, there's never any certainty. Even when he starts, he's not guaranteed to play. That's the reality of a club that size."

Emile Heskey, the former Liverpool and England striker, offered a slightly different perspective. Whilst acknowledging Delap's struggles, Heskey insisted the move itself was justified and that the player simply needs time to find his feet.

However, Heskey did identify a key area requiring urgent work. "Delap needs to sharpen his hold-up play," he told aGamble. "It's crucial because it dictates how teammates interact with you. Strikers need to be able to receive the ball with confidence that it'll stick, and that's something he should prioritise."

Heskey recognised the difficulty of focusing on aspects beyond the obvious metrics. "Everyone fixates on goals and assists, but overall play matters enormously for a striker at his level," he continued. "That said, he was absolutely right to take the Chelsea opportunity. He's got the belief he belongs at a top club, and his Manchester City background means he understands the demands of that environment."

The former striker concluded that patience may be required. "He'll need time to settle, possibly until next season, but I'm confident he'll come good eventually."
