Chelsea Shelves Xavi Pursuit as Hunt for New Manager Narrows

Chelsea have cooled their interest in Xavi Hernández as the search for a permanent manager intensifies at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues axed Liam Rosenior and handed interim duties to academy graduate Calum McFarlane, but a more experienced figure will arrive before next season. With Champions League football slipping away, Chelsea face a crucial recruitment decision to restore credibility after another underwhelming campaign.

While the west London outfit did make contact with the Spanish tactician following his Barcelona departure at the end of 2023/24, the club have since shifted their focus elsewhere. Multiple sources confirm Chelsea are no longer seriously pursuing Xavi and have instead prioritised alternative candidates.

Three names have emerged as front-runners: Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Xabi Alonso. Each represents a different profile—Iraola's proven Premier League pedigree, Silva's proven track record in English football, and Alonso's continental success all appeal to Chelsea's recruitment strategy. Cesc Fabregas has also featured in discussions, though the Como manager is unlikely to depart this summer.

The rationale behind Chelsea's managerial philosophy appears clear. The club believes it has finally established a coherent football identity filtering through the academy system, with former boss Enzo Maresca embodying those principles. Any successor must share similar values and continue that developmental trajectory.

Xavi, ranked among the world's top available managers, would theoretically fit that mould. The 45-year-old remains open to an English football adventure and has attracted interest from other elite clubs including Manchester United. However, Chelsea's recruitment process has evidently concluded he doesn't represent their primary target.

Fabrizio Romano moved to clarify the situation, stating that no formal discussions, approaches, or contacts currently exist between Chelsea and Xavi. The club continues working through its shortlist methodically, but the Spanish coach remains absent from those conversations.

For now, Iraola, Silva, and Alonso occupy Chelsea's focus as they navigate what shapes as one of the summer's most significant managerial appointments.
