Yet Chelsea are having the last laugh here, with transfer insiders confirming the club's absolute refusal to entertain any departure, regardless of the financial incentive.

The context matters. Chelsea endured a disastrous campaign, finishing tenth with both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior shown the door along the way. Xabi Alonso arrives as the new boss, tasked with rebuilding without the carrot of European football to dangle at prospective signings or existing stars. It's hardly the most appealing proposition, which makes Barcelona's move all the more understandable.

Yet Chelsea have drawn a line in the sand. Pedro sits among seven players designated as "untouchables" this window—a shortlist that apparently carries some actual weight.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano was unequivocal on the matter. "Chelsea's stance remains: we want to keep Joao Pedro," Romano stated. "He's a crucial part of the project." It's worth noting that Barcelona's pursuit of Pedro appears to be something of a fallback plan. The Camp Nou outfit remain fixated on landing Julián Álvarez, standing firm at their €100 million valuation for the Argentine. With that particular target proving resistant, Pedro has emerged as Plan B—though Chelsea's refusal to budge suggests Barcelona may need to start drawing up Plan C.
