Chelsea in pole position for Atletico Madrid's Alvarez as quiet negotiations intensify

Chelsea appear to have stolen a march on their rivals in pursuit of Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, with fresh reports suggesting the west London club is making the most significant progress in landing the Argentine forward.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have invested over £1billion since Todd Boehly's consortium took the reins from Roman Abramovich in May 2022. That spending spree has centred on acquiring young talent with an eye to future resale value, though results on the pitch have proven rather less impressive. Sixth and fourth-place finishes in the Premier League over the past two seasons tell their own story, and with Liam Rosenior now in the dugout following Enzo Maresca's departure, the club currently sits fifth.

Rosenior's squad clearly needs reinforcement if Chelsea harbour genuine title ambitions. A new goalkeeper, a commanding centre-back, and a proven goalscorer are among the priorities, and Alvarez fits that final requirement perfectly.

ESPN journalist Jorge Baravalle has suggested Chelsea are quietly pushing hardest for the ex-Manchester City striker's signature. "Chelsea, quietly, are advancing for Julián Álvarez," Baravalle stated, adding that representatives of the player's agency were in the capital last week, watching the Chelsea versus Arsenal fixture.

"I'm told there are conversations," Baravalle explained. "Part of the agency handling Julián's transfer was in London this week, watching Chelsea v Arsenal. They know both clubs want him, but what I'm being told is that, as of today, the most advanced contacts are with Chelsea."

Arsenal and Barcelona have also been linked with the 25-year-old, though neither appears to have matched Chelsea's momentum in negotiations.

The financial hurdle looms large, however. Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke suggests Atletico Madrid will demand £80million or more to part with their prized asset. "Alvarez is a top player, he's proven that," O'Rourke said. "He was South American Footballer of the Year and is Premier League proven after winning the title a couple of times with Man City. It'd be a huge deal for Atletico to even consider selling him as well, you're probably looking around £80million plus for someone like him."

With Alvarez contracted until 2030, Madrid hold all the cards. The Spanish club could equally look to tie their star down to fresh terms rather than cash in, though any hint of the player's willingness to move would inevitably attract Europe's elite.
