Chelsea Eye Conte Return as Managerial Merry-Go-Round Accelerates

Chelsea have begun mulling over the prospect of bringing Antonio Conte back to west London, according to reports emerging from Italy, as the club's managerial situation reaches boiling point.

The Blues dispensed with Liam Rosenior's services this week following a dismal run of form that has seen them lose five consecutive Premier League matches and suffer seven defeats across their last eight outings. Rosenior, who took the reins midway through the campaign, managed just 23 matches before the axe fell.

Calum McFarlane has stepped into the breach as interim manager, tasked with steadying the ship until season's end as Chelsea pursue European qualification and FA Cup progression.

In an official statement, the club acknowledged Rosenior's professionalism and integrity whilst conceding that "recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards." The search for a permanent appointment will commence in the summer, with the club promising a period of "self-reflection" before making their next long-term decision.

Conte, who delivered Premier League glory to Chelsea in 2017, remains under contract with Napoli until summer 2027. The Italian tactician is understood to harbour interest in the Italian national team role, though Chelsea are apparently keen to tempt him back to Stamford Bridge.

The managerial carousel has already generated considerable speculation, with both Lampard and Fabregas emerging as potential candidates. Yet both have swiftly batted away the overtures.

Fabregas, presently steering Como, was characteristically dismissive when quizzed about Chelsea links on Friday: "Nothing to say about that, it'd be stupid to think about that now. I didn't even see any quote from our president. I believe I will continue my chapter as Como head coach."

Lampard, currently in charge at Coventry City, proved equally circumspect during a Friday press conference. The former Chelsea midfielder stressed the difficulties of management and the unpredictable nature of the role before emphasising his contentment in the Midlands.
