McKenna Stays Focused on Ipswich Promotion Quest Amid United Speculation

Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna has dismissed the prospect of swapping Portman Road for Old Trafford, with his undivided attention fixed squarely on steering the Tractor Boys back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The 39-year-old guided Ipswich to consecutive promotions that culminated in top-flight football in 2024, only for the club to suffer immediate relegation alongside fellow promoted sides Burnley and Leeds. Sunderland appear poised to avoid that fate this season, but McKenna's men sit third in the Championship, just five points adrift of the automatic promotion spots and comfortably placed in the play-off positions.

McKenna's Contract Provides Security

Having penned fresh terms at Ipswich until 2028 on a lucrative deal, McKenna remains unmoved by potential overtures from the Premier League's biggest names. Transfer insider Pete O'Rourke stressed that the former Manchester United coach harbours no intention of departing Suffolk, despite previous links with Chelsea and Brighton.

"His focus is entirely on winning promotion back to the Premier League," O'Rourke explained. "He wants to finish the job following their relegation last season. There are no plans for McKenna to be leaving Ipswich."

The Ipswich boss worked as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching setup at United and retains considerable esteem within the club, though any approach would face a firm rejection for now.

Carrick Leads United Race

At Old Trafford, interim manager Michael Carrick has emerged as the clear favourite to land the permanent position following an impressive start to his tenure. Victories over Manchester City and Arsenal have ignited speculation that the club could reward Carrick with the job permanently.

However, Gary Neville remains unconvinced, maintaining his position that Carrick should not be appointed despite any strong run of results. United's hierarchy, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada, and sporting director Jason Wilcox, are believed to prefer a proven winner over another homegrown option following the Solskjaer precedent. England manager Thomas Tuchel and Paris Saint-Germain's Luis Enrique are among those under consideration.
