Carrick Signals Willingness to Join Man Utd as Solskjaer Holds Board Talks

Manchester United's search for a new manager has taken a fresh turn, with Michael Carrick reportedly receptive to stepping into an assistant's role at Old Trafford.

The development follows face-to-face talks between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United's hierarchy—Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox—which took place over the weekend. Though the specifics of those conversations remain under wraps, speculation is mounting that the former Red Devils boss will take the helm on an interim basis through to the season's end.

Amorim's departure came on Monday, barely a year into his tenure at the club. The Portuguese manager's exit proved particularly curious given that United sit sixth in the Premier League table—a marked improvement on last season's 15th-place finish. However, tensions with the board and his public commentary ultimately sealed his fate. Darren Fletcher currently holds the fort in the dugout, though a permanent successor is expected imminently.

Should Solskjaer's appointment materialise, Carrick appears keen to reunite with his former club in a supporting capacity. The ex-United midfielder has previous experience in such a role, having stepped up as caretaker manager during his coaching tenure in 2021. His most recent position came at Middlesbrough, where he enjoyed a respectable spell before the club opted to part ways in 2025 following their failure to secure promotion back to the top flight.

The club hopes to have matters settled before the Manchester City derby on January 17th, with personal scheduling commitments for both Carrick and Solskjaer having complicated the timeline thus far. Fletcher will continue in charge for the FA Cup fixture against Brighton.

Not everyone, however, is convinced about this potential pairing. Steve McManaman has voiced concerns, suggesting that bringing both men through the door simultaneously would constitute a "definite no-no," arguing instead that the club must plump for one or the other.

Previous reporting has suggested INEOS views both figures as potential number ones, making a double appointment unlikely. Yet the latest indications suggest the pair could work harmoniously, with Carrick apparently content to assume the secondary role beneath Solskjaer.
