Carragher: Salah Has Surpassed Ronaldo as Premier League's Greatest Overseas Attacker

Mohamed Salah's impending exit from Liverpool represents far more than just a changing of the guard at Anfield—it signals the Premier League itself is about to lose another world-class talent of genuine generational significance.

The Egyptian's departure comes hot on the heels of Kevin De Bruyne leaving Manchester City, and Jamie Carragher reckons English football faces a genuine crisis if elite replacements don't materialise. The void left by these departures threatens what Carragher describes as a potential "superstar famine" across the league.

In nine seasons with the Reds, Salah has amassed an extraordinary 255 goals and 122 assists, establishing himself as a bona fide club legend with six major honours to his name—including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. Having penned a lucrative new deal at the end of last season following Arne Slot's title-winning first campaign in charge, Salah announced this week that the current season will be his last at the club.

Carragher's assessment places the 32-year-old in rarefied air when measuring overseas attacking talent across Premier League history. In his Telegraph column, the former Liverpool defender argues that only one player eclipses Salah's output and consistency: Thierry Henry.

"While many will argue the merits of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp or Eric Cantona, none of them produced the same devastating numbers as consistently, season-after-season, as the Egyptian," Carragher wrote.

He's particularly dismissive of Ronaldo's Premier League pedigree, noting that the Portuguese star's time at Manchester United bookended his peak years at Real Madrid. "Salah edges ahead of him when judging strictly on Premier League performance and impact," Carragher contends, adding that in an all-time Premier League XI, Salah would be an automatic pick in the front three alongside Henry and Ronaldo.

The verdict becomes even starker when examining Salah's standing in Liverpool's pantheon. Carragher recently compiled his ten greatest Reds players and found himself placing Salah immediately after the traditional elite: Steven Gerrard, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, John Barnes and Ian Rush. That sixth-place ranking, Carragher suggests, represents the ultimate compliment to the winger's contribution to the club.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's search for a successor has already begun, with Bayern Munich's Michael Olise identified as the ideal replacement—though Steven Gerrard has stressed his former club "have to buy a box office replacement" to maintain their status.
