Carragher and Keane Savage Tottenham's Midfield After Sunderland Collapse

Roberto De Zerbi's managerial debut at Tottenham ended in disappointment as Nordi Mukiele's goal proved decisive in a loss to Sunderland on Sunday. The result saw Spurs slip into the relegation zone, sitting two points above the drop with the new-manager bounce failing to materialise.

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane were particularly unforgiving in their post-match analysis, zeroing in on the defending that allowed Mukiele's goal to stand. Rather than attributing the setback to bad fortune, Carragher was adamant the defending represented a fundamental breakdown.

"You've got five Tottenham players here almost like a cage, all facing Mukiele," Carragher explained while dissecting the goal. "He has to go there. It can't be any other way. So when you say you're unlucky, that, for me, is not unlucky. That can't be allowed to happen."

Carragher identified midfielders Archie Gray and Conor Gallagher as the primary culprits in the defensive lapse. "If I tell you now, this is where somebody is going to score from – that is not unlucky. It's not. It can't be," he said.

Keane echoed those sentiments, pointing to a lack of basic defensive nous. "Gallagher has just got to slow down there. It's far too easy. And Archie Gray has got to get out there, leave the runner. That's far too easy," the former Manchester United captain said. "When you're down there fighting for your lives, these are big moments. It's got to be stopped earlier. It's football intelligence – spot the danger."

Keane stressed the importance of mastering fundamentals when battling relegation: "Slow it down and show them into wide areas. That's the basics. You've got to do the basics right when you're down there."

Despite praising both Gray and Lucas Bergvall as among Tottenham's better performers this season, Carragher flagged the midfield as a significant concern for De Zerbi. The area has been problematic throughout the campaign and continues to represent a weak link compared to their relegation rivals.

"The teams they're fighting – West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Leeds – they've all got better central midfields than Tottenham," Carragher observed. "That is my one big worry for Tottenham in terms of going down."

Conor Gallagher's arrival, despite being a target for De Zerbi, has failed to deliver the required impact. Though established as a capable Premier League performer elsewhere, his stint at Spurs has been underwhelming from the outset.

Keane attempted to identify any redeeming quality but found little to work with. "When you're thinking about what they're really good at – because you have to hang your hat on something if you're going to play in the Premier League – are they really good going forward? Are they a goal threat? No, not really. They're not technically great. Are they amazing defensively? They're not great at that either."

For De Zerbi, addressing the midfield department appears essential if Tottenham are to mount an escape from the drop zone.
