Fernandes Signals He's Staying Put as United's Hierarchy Do Complete About-Face

Bruno Fernandes has given every indication that Manchester United won't be losing their captain this summer, putting paid to mounting speculation about a potential departure to the Saudi Pro League.

The Portugal midfielder, now 31, has sent a clear signal about his intentions just as INEOS have executed a dramatic reversal on their stance regarding his future. Where the club's hierarchy previously appeared open to cashing in on Fernandes, they're now committed to doing everything within their reach to keep him at Old Trafford.

Fernandes himself appears entirely aligned with that thinking. Speaking to North American outlet Men In Blazers, he revealed that his family has put down genuine roots in Manchester since arriving in 2020. "I feel at home at Manchester, my kids feel at home here," the United skipper explained. "So it's wonderful for me to be in a place where my kids can enjoy so much and feel so much at home as they do in Manchester. I felt Mancunian until I heard my kids speaking English and having the accent then I understand that I'm not as much as they are."

The playmaker's resurgence has been unmistakable since Michael Carrick took the interim reins. Restored to his natural No.10 position after a testing opening stretch under Ruben Amorim—during which he was shunted into a deeper midfield berth—Fernandes has rediscovered his spark in spectacular fashion. Eight goals and 17 assists across all competitions tells the story of a player firing on all cylinders as United edge closer to Champions League qualification.

Saudi Arabia's elite have certainly remained interested. Al-Hilal mounted an approach last summer that went nowhere, with Fernandes politely declining. There had been whispers that United's upper echelon were willing to let him go, though they lacked the stomach to have that conversation with Amorim, who never wanted to see his star man depart.

That narrative has now shifted entirely. Carrick, speaking recently, was unambiguous about where he stands. "Bruno's definitely not someone we'd want to lose, I can say that," the interim boss stated. "He's important for us and he's definitely one we wouldn't want to lose. Bruno has done it for a long period of time now, in the big moments and making the difference, whether scoring or creating he's normally around it."

The 31-year-old's technical understanding with Casemiro in midfield, combined with his work on set plays alongside Jonny Evans, represents a crucial cog in United's machinery. "There's also the bit you can coach and then there's a little bit of the players and the understanding," Carrick continued. "They've got a great connection there with that. Then the passing around it, getting in positions where you can play that final pass, so there's not a lot else to say that I've not sat here and said before about Bruno."

With Fernandes contracted until summer 2027, there's breathing room to negotiate fresh terms—though his current mindset suggests that conversation may prove straightforward. The captain's heart appears firmly planted in Manchester, and United are finally singing from the same hymn sheet.
