Bruno Fernandes Fires Back at Roy Keane: 'He's Twisted What I Said'

Bruno Fernandes has launched a scathing rebuttal at Roy Keane, accusing the pundit of deliberately misquoting him and constructing a narrative that simply doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

The Manchester United captain's ire was sparked after Keane took aim at him on The Overlap podcast, suggesting that Fernandes' obsession with personal accolades undermines his mentality as a team player. Keane claimed that following the Forest match, Fernandes had said: "A few times, I probably should have shot but I made them passes" – and used this as ammunition to question whether the midfielder possessed the right mindset to deliver silverware.

"How can your mindset of a footballer be going into a match to be about an individual record?" Keane asked. "He won't be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team."

There's just one problem: Fernandes didn't say that.

His actual remarks struck a completely different tone. "There were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot," he explained. "I'm very happy for the assist, but more than that, I'm happy for the win and to finish the season on a high."

Now appearing on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Fernandes has made clear his frustration at being misrepresented. He revealed he'd even sought out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's contact details to get Keane's phone number, keen to address the matter directly.

"Like I've always said, I don't mind criticism," Fernandes stated. "What I don't like is when people lie about things. What Roy Keane said is a lie because either he saw some other interview or he can't say that I said something I've simply not said. Luckily for me, everything is on record."

The midfielder stressed his respect for Keane's pedigree and history at Old Trafford but made his position crystal clear: "I accept his criticism, I accept that he might like me as a player or not. But what I don't like is that he puts words in my mouth that have not been said."

Fernandes' frustration comes hot on the heels of a record-breaking campaign. On Sunday, he shattered the Premier League's single-season assists record with 21, surpassing the previous joint-record of 20 held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. This came during United's 3-0 demolition of Brighton on the final day.
