Ancelotti Backs Neymar for World Cup Opener Despite Calf Setback

Neymar's path to Brazil's opening World Cup game remains on track, according to Carlo Ancelotti, who has backed the forward to shake off a calf problem that has already ruled him out of tune-up clashes.

The Santos attacker, who boasts an impressive record of 79 international goals across 128 appearances for his country, was recalled to Ancelotti's squad earlier this month despite having limited involvement during the Italian's tenure in charge. However, the Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed on Thursday that a calf issue would keep him sidelined for the Panama and Egypt friendlies.

Speaking ahead of Brazil's clash with Panama on Saturday, Ancelotti outlined the timeline of events surrounding the injury. Santos initially flagged minor swelling to the coaching staff before the squad announcement, with the club handling the player's management until May 27th. Following that date, responsibility shifted to the CBF, who have since overseen Neymar's recovery programme.

"He's working well, and he's in good spirits," Ancelotti explained to reporters. "We believe he can be ready for the first World Cup match. If he's not ready for the first match, he'll be ready for the second. So we have absolutely no intention of replacing anyone."

Brazil's Group C opponents in the June 11 to July 19 tournament—staged across North America—are Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. The Seleção are chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup crown.
