Bellingham's Manchester United escape clause: The Klopp contingency plan

The Real Madrid dressing room soap opera has taken another twist, with Jude Bellingham apparently lining up a summer switch to Manchester United—but only if Jurgen Klopp gets the top job at the Santiago Bernabéu.

It's been a turbulent campaign for Los Blancos by their lofty standards. Xabi Alonso's sacking in January following a Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona set the tone, with reports suggesting the English midfielder, Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior harboured doubts about the former Bayer Leverkusen boss's tactical approach and interpersonal style.

One source went further, claiming the real issue wasn't Alonso at all: "The problem is not Xabi. Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Bellingham are incompatible; you can't have a balanced team with those three."

Bellingham wasn't having it. The 22-year-old took to social media to fire back, writing: "Until now I've let far too many of these slide, always hoping the truth will come to light in its own time. But honestly… What a load of s**t. Truly feel sorry for the people that hang onto the every word of these clowns and their 'sources'. Do not believe everything you read, every now and then these lot need to be held accountable for spreading this kind of damaging misinformation for clicks and added controversy."

Madrid have since steadied the ship under interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa, who's guided them to the top of La Liga—two points clear of Barcelona, though the Catalans have a game in hand. They'll face Benfica in the Champions League play-offs after failing to secure automatic qualification for the knockout stages.

Yet Spanish reports now claim Bellingham has a protective clause in place. Should Klopp arrive at Madrid, the former Birmingham City prospect has allegedly reached an agreement in principle with Manchester United for an immediate departure.

According to the reports, Klopp himself wants Bellingham out if he gets the job, but the midfielder isn't waiting around to find out. Instead, he's secured a bolt-hole at Old Trafford—a safeguard against managerial upheaval and the prospect of losing his central role in the team's project.

"The move is contingent solely on Klopp's arrival," the reports state. "If the German coach does not land at the Santiago Bernabéu, the midfielder intends to remain at the club."

It's framed as a protection strategy. Bellingham has no interest in waiting for a new manager to reassess his position or reduce his influence. By securing terms with United now, he's getting ahead of the curve—ensuring a destination where he maintains his status as a key figure. Old Trafford, it seems, offers precisely that kind of structural prominence he's enjoyed in Madrid.
