Beckham Eyes Historic Ronaldo-Messi Reunion at Inter Miami as Saudi Tensions Simmer

David Beckham is banking on a summer blockbuster that would see Cristiano Ronaldo join Inter Miami and finally share a pitch with Lionel Messi in what would constitute a seismic moment for global football.

The Inter Miami co-owner is said to be orchestrating the move, having already secured Messi's commitment and viewing Ronaldo's arrival as the crowning jewel of his American venture. Sources suggest Beckham remains convinced the deal remains feasible and isn't ruling out any possibilities.

Ronaldo's path to such a move, however, remains decidedly murky. The 40-year-old has been at Al Nassr since early 2023, following his acrimonious departure from Manchester United. That split came after his contract was terminated by mutual consent following the infamous Piers Morgan interview that torched his Old Trafford bridges irreparably.

His Saudi tenure has been prolific: 117 goals across 133 appearances. Yet recent weeks have brought complications. The Portuguese star has sat out Al Nassr's last two fixtures amid speculation that tensions with the Saudi Pro League club and its backers at the Private Investment Fund have soured. This comes despite him penning fresh terms through June 2027 valued at a reported minimum of £492m across two years.

The timing of his discontent is notable. Al Nassr finished third domestically last season and exited the AFC Champions League at the semi-final stage, while rival Al-Hilal managed to secure Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad during the winter window. Al Nassr's own recruitment has been modest by comparison, bringing in just Iraqi centre-back Hayer Abdulkareem and Saudi forward Abdullah Al-Hamdan.

Walid Al-Faraj, a prominent Saudi Pro League commentator, has waded into the row, delivering a withering assessment of Ronaldo's conduct. "Cristiano Ronaldo needs to know his place," Al-Faraj declared. "This country is called Saudi Arabia, not Ronaldo's Arabia. He confuses being an ambassador with being a manager. He is an employee who earns a huge salary and must respect the league or leave."

Inter Miami's ambitions to establish themselves as a genuine force on the world stage appear to hinge on assembling a constellation of elite talent. Bringing Ronaldo into the fold would certainly achieve that, creating an unprecedented pairing of two of football's greatest ever competitors. Whether Al Nassr—and Ronaldo himself—will cooperate remains the burning question.
