Manchester United are plotting their next midfield recruitment after sealing the Ederson Silva transfer from Atalanta, with West Ham's Mateus Fernandes emerging as their prime target.

The Old Trafford club are making waves in the transfer market ahead of the World Cup, targeting at least five new additions this window. While a striker, winger, centre-back and left-back could all arrive, the priority remains overhauling the midfield department under Michael Carrick's watch.

With Ederson's move now confirmed, ESPN has reported that United are accelerating their pursuit of Fernandes, the 21-year-old West Ham midfielder who impressed during the Hammers' Championship-bound campaign. The club have already opened dialogue with their London counterparts about a potential deal.

The young midfielder has become available following West Ham's relegation, and the club have reportedly accepted his departure is inevitable. Journalist Ross Harwood revealed that United already have a verbal agreement on personal terms with Fernandes, with the player expected to push for the move. A deal worth around £45m is the target, though negotiations continue.

BBC Sport's Simon Stone has now weighed in on the saga, expressing confidence the transfer will go through despite the current impasse. "I would be surprised if the deal for Mateus Fernandes didn't get done," Stone told BBC Sport. "I believe the club are in a bit of a stand off with West Ham United at the moment, who are adamant they don't have to sell and want £80m."

The sticking point appears to be valuation. West Ham are holding firm at £80m, though Stone reckons a resolution shouldn't take long given that neither Fernandes nor Ederson made their respective nations' World Cup squads. That shared circumstance could accelerate matters.

Stone also hinted that a departure for Manuel Ugarte could smooth the path forward. "I also get the sense that if Manchester United could do a deal which would see Manuel Ugarte leave the club in some way, shape or form, then that would suit all parties," he added.

Fernandes has already signalled his willingness to leave, having given his blessing on personal terms. The next chapter will depend on whether United and West Ham can bridge the £35m gap in their valuations.
