Bayern Munich's Interest in Rashford Remains Lukewarm as German Giants Explore Alternatives

The transfer rumour mill has been churning over Marcus Rashford's future, with Bayern Munich's name cropping up as a potential suitor—though transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on the prospect of any imminent deal.

Barcelona have elected not to exercise their £26million option to make Rashford's loan permanent, ending the Spanish club's interest in the Manchester United winger. The Blaugrana have until June 15 to activate the clause, but have instead pivoted to securing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Despite their reluctance to commit funds, Barcelona have propositioned United about another temporary arrangement for Rashford. However, United—who will compete in the Champions League under Michael Carrick next season—are intent on a permanent exit rather than another loan arrangement.

Bayern Munich have entered the conversation as a potential destination, with Vincent Kompany's side hunting for reinforcement on the left flank. The Bavarian outfit had previously targeted Gordon before he joined Barcelona, and have also struck out in their pursuit of Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha, with the Reds refusing to part with the 17-year-old prospect this summer.

Christian Falk of Bild first reported Rashford as a possible option for Bayern in early June, noting that while the club could comfortably meet a €40million (£34.5million) valuation, the player's substantial wage demands presented a significant stumbling block. Falk suggested Bayern were unlikely to commit such salary commitments to a backup option, though he acknowledged that previous targets—Luis Diaz among them—had materialised despite not being initial priorities.

Romano's assessment, however, suggests Bayern's flirtation with Rashford amounts to little more than due diligence. The journalist revealed that Bayern made enquiries two to three weeks ago to gauge the situation, but their focus has shifted elsewhere. Players like Saibari represent a markedly different proposition—offering comparable on-pitch qualities whilst demanding substantially lower fees and wages.

"There is some people at Bayern appreciating Rashford, but at the moment, no negotiation, no bid, and the focus at Bayern is on different players," Romano explained. With no formal approach forthcoming and Bayern's attentions trained on more economical alternatives, Rashford's path away from Old Trafford appears unlikely to lead to Munich—at least not in the immediate term.
