Barcelona Eye Real Sociedad Starlet as Rashford Deal Stalls

Barcelona find themselves at a crossroads in their pursuit of attacking reinforcements, with the future of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford at Camp Nou increasingly uncertain due to the club's well-documented financial constraints.

Rashford's loan spell from United has proven a shrewd piece of business on paper. The winger has delivered the goods this season with 14 goals and 14 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions—a return that makes the mooted £26m permanent fee look decidedly reasonable. His arrival last summer came after Barcelona missed out on Luis Diaz and Nico Williams, yet the gamble has paid dividends far beyond initial expectations.

Yet therein lies the rub. Despite Rashford's impressive performances, Barcelona's notorious financial straits mean stumping up the full £26m remains problematic. Recent negotiations have centred on a second season-long loan arrangement, with Barcelona proposing a conditional obligation to buy triggered by a modest number of appearances. United, however, show little inclination to budge from their asking price and may shop the forward elsewhere entirely.

With that scenario looming, Barcelona's hierarchy has begun contingency planning. Head coach Hansi Flick has apparently sanctioned exploration of Real Sociedad's 23-year-old winger Yeremay as a more economical alternative. The Spanish youngster would arrive for around £17m—significantly less than Rashford's valuation—and has contributed 11 goals and 9 assists in Spain's second tier this season.

Flick harbours reservations about the move, but the club's hierarchy view Yeremay differently to established names. At his current trajectory, the thinking goes, investing now represents better value than waiting until he commands premium fees. These sorts of talents rarely remain affordable once they break through at top level.

That said, Rashford hasn't been written off entirely. Barcelona's sporting director Deco continues fresh talks with United regarding their preferred target, though the club remains willing to exhaust alternative options first. Even with Champions League football secured, LaLiga's stringent financial regulations leave little room for extravagance. A permanent Rashford deal, whilst not ruled out, would require Barcelona to move decisively—or accept that their most impressive loan signing of recent seasons may slip through their fingers.
