Barcelona Pull Plug on Rashford Deal as Bayern Munich Circle with £34.5m Offer

The Barcelona dream is over for Marcus Rashford. After an impressive loan campaign that yielded 28 goal contributions, the 28-year-old winger appeared poised to make his switch to the Camp Nou permanent. But the Catalan club have now decided to walk away from the deal entirely.

Barcelona held a €30m purchase option on the England international, who had already agreed personal terms on a three-year contract with significantly reduced wages. Yet despite those arrangements being in place, Barca have chosen not to activate the clause, leaving Rashford facing an unexpected return to Manchester United.

The decision stems from three key factors, all revolving around their preference for Anthony Gordon. Manager Hansi Flick was particularly impressed by Gordon's defensive intensity and pressing game—precisely where Rashford has historically shown weakness. Age also played a role, with Rashford approaching 29 next October while Gordon remains three and a half years his junior.

Financially, the numbers proved almost identical. Although Rashford's wages have been trimmed by nearly 40%, his annual amortization cost sits at €10m. Gordon's salary is considerably lower, but his amortization runs to €14m annually, making the overall financial burden roughly equivalent.

However, Rashford's Old Trafford exile may prove brief. Bayern Munich have emerged as serious suitors, prepared to table an offer of €40m—£34.5m—to lure the winger to Germany. That represents an £8.5m windfall compared to what United would have received had Barcelona completed their purchase.

The Bavarian outfit are hunting for attacking reinforcements after missing out on Gordon and failing to prise Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha away from Merseyside. With Barcelona's rejection now confirmed, Bayern will hope Rashford proves more receptive to their advances, particularly given the prospect of reuniting with England teammate Harry Kane in the Bundesliga.
