Heaven May Fall Victim to Manchester United's Goalkeeper Reshuffle

Manchester United's summer goalkeeper hunt could spell trouble for Ayden Heaven, with the teenage prospect facing the axe if the Red Devils land Leeds' Karl Darlow.

Heaven arrived at Old Trafford from Arsenal's academy in January 2025 and has already made a significant impression, turning out 17 times in the Premier League last season. The 19-year-old started 11 of those matches, earning praise from both Michael Carrick and his predecessor Ruben Amorim for a maturity that belies his years.

Yet the youngster now finds himself caught in a goalkeeper crisis of United's own making. The departure of Andre Onana – who thrived during a loan stint at Trabzonspor – combined with Altay Bayindir's exit-seeking, has left Carrick desperately short of reliable backup options. Senne Lammens, the £18m recruit from Royal Antwerp last summer, hasn't quite delivered the goods expected of him.

Enter Darlow. The 35-year-old Leeds veteran is available on a free transfer this summer, and United have begun exploratory talks about bringing him in. Sam Johnstone, the former Red Devil who came through the academy before his ill-fated spell at relegated Wolves, is also in the frame.

Yet here's where it gets complicated. UEFA's squad registration rules for European competition present a thorny problem. In the 25-man Champions League squad, a maximum of 17 players can be "nurtured" outside the English football system. Of the remaining eight slots, only four can go to players trained at other clubs, with the other four reserved for homegrown talent – those developed at the club and aged over 21.

Heaven, still under 21 and having not spent two years at United, doesn't tick those boxes. Should Darlow arrive – an English player developed elsewhere – the arithmetic becomes unforgiving. The youngster could find himself locked out of European football entirely, unable to register for Champions League duties.

Johnstone, by contrast, would count as homegrown having progressed through United's system, sidestepping the problem altogether. It's a conundrum Carrick must now untangle.
