Madrid Mayor Blames UEFA, Not Arsenal, for Atletico's Champions League Exit

Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, the mayor of Madrid, has unleashed a withering 228-word tirade suggesting the real opponent his team faced wasn't Mikel Arteta's side at all—it was UEFA itself. The passionate tribalist levelled accusations of predetermined bias, questioning everything from referee selection to VAR decision-making.

"We got to play against UEFA," Martinez-Almeida declared, arguing that appointing a German official was "incomprehensible" given the nations' rivalry for Champions League spots. He remained unconvinced by the linesman's offside call that ruled out a Riccardo Calafiori push on Giuliano Simeone in the box, insisting replays proved the Atletico player was onside and deserved a penalty.

The mayor also fumed over another disallowed spot-kick appeal when Calafiori appeared to tread on Antoine Griezmann's foot, only for a prior foul by Marc Pubill on Gabriel to be given instead. "It's blatant," he protested, adding that the referee's whistle seemed designed to rush proceedings toward an Arsenal victory.

Interestingly, Diego Simeone—hardly known for restraint—took defeat with surprising equanimity, acknowledging Arsenal "deserved to get through" despite his customary sideline theatrics.
