Mateta Agreement Reached with Villa as Chelsea Circle for Potential Swoop

The transfer carousel at Crystal Palace continues to spin, with Jean-Philippe Mateta seemingly the next to depart following Marc Guehi's exit and manager Oliver Glasner's announcement that he will leave the club by the summer at the latest.

Villa appear to be moving swiftly on the Palace forward. Football Transfers claim that Mateta has 'agreed personal terms' with Unai Emery's outfit, who are hunting for a striker after Donyell Malen's switch to AS Roma. Yet the deal remains far from done, with Chelsea lurking in the background ready to pounce.

The Blues are said to be 'in contact' with Mateta's representatives, keen to stay informed of developments even if their level of commitment to an actual bid remains uncertain. It's the sort of move that could yet derail Villa's plans if Chelsea decide to make a formal approach.

Mateta's desire to leave is straightforward enough. The Times have reported that he wants out over broken promises, with the 28-year-old convinced Palace haven't matched his ambitions. Having netted 38 league goals over the past three seasons, he believes the club has failed to deliver on recruitment pledges and contract terms. Regular European football—ideally Champions League action—is what he's after, and Palace can't offer that.

Juventus had the first real crack at landing him this month, but their loan-to-buy proposal was rejected. That's opened the door for Premier League clubs to muscle in, though Palace are holding firm on their valuation. They're demanding somewhere between €35 million and €40 million for their star man.

It's a hefty price for someone entering his 29th year, yet multiple European outfits have already engaged in talks this month beyond just the three most commonly discussed suitors. Glasner himself acknowledged the reality of the situation, saying: "There will be a price that Crystal Palace would accept, with 18 months left on his contract. We'd do the deal, if JP wants. If nobody pays that price, then he will stay."
