Aston Villa Seal Luiz Return as Mateta Interest Cools

Aston Villa are poised to welcome Douglas Luiz back to Villa Park after securing a verbal agreement with Juventus for the Brazilian midfielder's return.

The 27-year-old, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, will rejoin Unai Emery's squad as the Midlands club continue their January overhaul. The arrangement involves a paid loan deal with a buy option clause, with Forest facilitating Luiz's move back to his former club.

Luiz's stock has diminished considerably since leaving Villa in the summer. He netted nine goals and provided five assists in the Premier League during 2023/24, a campaign that convinced Juventus to splash out on his signature. However, the Italian giants have seen little return on that investment, with the midfielder struggling for minutes in Turin and subsequently finding game time hard to come by at Forest.

For Villa, bringing Luiz back addresses an urgent midfield need. Boubakar Kamara's season-ending knee injury has left a significant gap in their engine room, forcing Emery to seek reinforcements. The club had cast their net widely, with Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek among those considered, but a reunion with Luiz appears the most straightforward solution.

This marks Villa's fourth addition of the window, following the earlier arrivals of teenage forwards Brian Madjo and Alysson, who cost around £20 million combined. The activity reflects the club's determination to make up for a subdued summer hampered by PSR constraints and squad departures.

On the striker front, Villa have made their choice. They are stepping back from pursuing Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, with Tammy Abraham now their primary target. Besiktas triggered their clause to sign Abraham from Roma on Monday, but the former Chelsea forward is set for Villa Park instead. Sources suggest his arrival is now all but confirmed, with the financial hurdle overcome. With their strikeforce secured and funds tightening, Mateta has fallen down the pecking order as Villa close out their transfer business.
