Aston Villa Eyeing Mourinho as Emery Madrid Speculation Mounts

Aston Villa find themselves in a precarious position ahead of next season, with reports suggesting the club is quietly tracking Jose Mourinho while harbouring anxieties about their own manager's future.

The Benfica chief is widely expected to make a high-profile return to Real Madrid, with club president Florentino Perez reportedly championing his cause to succeed Alvaro Arbeloa at the Bernabeu. Whether other influential voices at the Spanish giants will align with this vision remains an open question.

However, Real Madrid's interest extends beyond Mourinho. Unai Emery, who has transformed Villa's fortunes, is also on their radar—and that's where Villa's headache begins.

Emery has orchestrated a resurgence at Villa Park that's been nothing short of impressive, but Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke has flagged concerns within the club that the manager might find it impossible to resist a proposition from a heavyweight like Real Madrid.

"If you're a top manager, a club of Real Madrid's stature and ambitions is going to turn your head," O'Rourke explained. "That's just the reality of football at the highest level."

Villa's best defence against losing their prized asset, according to Rourke, hinges on Champions League qualification this season. A successful campaign—already highlighted by an Europa League final appearance—would represent a genuine achievement and might persuade Emery to stay put.

"Emery seems content at Villa, and the feeling is mutual," Rourke noted. "If they can seal Champions League football, the club will feel confident about keeping him."

Yet Villa are taking no chances. The club is keeping close watch on Mourinho's situation, seemingly prepared to make a move should the worst-case scenario unfold: Real Madrid rejecting Mourinho in favour of Emery, and subsequently landing the Villa boss.

For now, Mourinho appears to be Real Madrid's primary target. If the Benfica manager gets his dream move to the Bernabeu, it would eliminate the speculation surrounding Emery and leave Villa to focus on their own Champions League push. That outcome would suit Villa perfectly.
