Aston Villa's Champions League aspirations have taken a significant knock after suffering an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Friday evening, with the midlands rivals occupying the Premier League basement.

Former Villa defender Lee Hendrie has sounded the alarm about the club's trajectory, suggesting the wheels are coming off at a crucial juncture.

"I'm not seeing that character or belief at the moment," Hendrie told Sky Sports. "Villa's recent results have been ugly. Their season is genuinely hanging in the balance. Look at the Newcastle FA Cup exit—that wasn't good enough either. I'm starting to panic now. They face enormous matches coming up, and right now I can see Villa coming apart."

Hendrie elaborated on why he believes the club faces genuine peril if the current malaise continues. "The pressure must be weighing on them. You can enjoy brilliant spells throughout a season, but this is where it matters. You can't simply gloss over problems and hope they disappear," he explained.

"I'm not witnessing that resilience lately, and frankly, that concerns me. Yes, there's absolutely reason to worry. Manchester United are flying, Chelsea are in tremendous form, Liverpool are snapping at heels, and suddenly Villa are dropping points. The mood is turning negative, and that's a serious issue for any big club.

"Not long ago we were discussing Villa as title contenders. Now we're talking about them potentially slipping out of the top five altogether. That would constitute a genuine catastrophe for their season."
