Parlour Backs Eze to Start Over Odegaard in Chelsea Showdown

Mikel Arteta faces a selection dilemma ahead of Arsenal's weekend encounter with Chelsea, with former Gunners midfielder Ray Parlour suggesting the manager should stick with Eberechi Eze rather than recall Martin Odegaard.

The north London side's summer spending spree—totalling approximately £250m—has delivered genuine quality across the pitch, particularly in attacking midfield where Eze arrived to challenge Odegaard for a starting berth. Both have had their moments under the spotlight this season, though neither has been immune to criticism.

Eze's case strengthened considerably last weekend. The England international netted twice in Arsenal's commanding 4-1 dismantling of Spurs, a display that caught Parlour's attention. With Arsenal hosting their London neighbours while sitting atop the Premier League standings, momentum could prove decisive.

Speaking to Metro via BetMGM, Parlour acknowledged Odegaard's undoubted quality but highlighted the midfielder's injury-plagued campaign. "On his day he is different class," Parlour said. "But Eze has bided his time. When you're not playing, it's disappointing, but you have to keep working hard and show desire in training with the right attitude."

Parlour emphasised the importance of professionalism during spells on the sidelines. "It's easy to come in and start sulking," he explained. "Being in training first, being ready to go—that's what I would have done, and managers notice that. He got his opportunity against Spurs and scored two good goals."

The former Arsenal man believes Eze will likely retain his position, though he acknowledged Arteta must weigh up Chelsea's considerable midfield threat. Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Enzo Fernandez represent formidable opposition, whilst Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi will anchor their setup. "When you're going for the title, you can't rest players—you need your best team," Parlour noted.

Parlour also offered his assessment of Chelsea's vulnerabilities. Despite possessing genuine attacking talent—including an in-form Joao Felix—the Blues have shown inconsistency that could prove costly at the Emirates. "If you score first against Chelsea, they can crumble," he suggested. "They are a bit flaky at the back and will give up opportunities."

The goalkeeper situation adds another layer of unpredictability. Robert Sanchez can be either commanding or calamitous, qualities that define Chelsea's broader season-to-season reliability. "You don't know what version of them is going to turn up," Parlour observed. "Chelsea can lose 3-1 to Leeds or take a point off Manchester City."

Home advantage, Parlour believes, could prove decisive. An electric atmosphere at the Emirates, combined with Eze's current form and Chelsea's defensive frailties, gives Arsenal a genuine opportunity to extend their title push.
