Alvarez Closes Door on Atletico: Arsenal Pressing Hard in European Chase

The race for Julian Alvarez's signature has taken a decisive turn, with the Argentine striker having firmly shut the door on fresh terms at Atletico Madrid.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on his YouTube channel, stating unequivocally that Alvarez will not be renewing with the Spanish outfit. "That's 100 per cent decided," the transfer specialist declared, removing any lingering doubt about the player's intentions.

Alvarez's refusal to extend his deal represents a major boost for Arsenal, who are among several heavyweight clubs circling the 26-year-old. Paris Saint-Germain remain their primary rival for his services, though Barcelona and Chelsea have also registered interest. The latter's absence from European competition has effectively ended their chances of landing him.

The Argentine's desire to move stems from ambitions to compete at the very pinnacle of European football. Having joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in August 2024 for €95 million (£82m), Alvarez swiftly established himself as a key figure under Diego Simeone. Yet he remains unconvinced about the club's ability to mount sustained challenges for La Liga and Champions League glory.

According to Spanish journalist Pedro Fullana, both Arsenal and PSG have received the all-clear from Alvarez's representatives to commence discussions. Intermediaries connected to both clubs have already been in contact with Atletico regarding the player's availability.

Arsenal are reportedly making an aggressive push to secure the deal ahead of their French counterparts. The Gunners have explored the possibility of using Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli as makeweights to reduce Atletico's asking price, which currently sits at €150 million (£130m).

Simeone himself acknowledged last month that Alvarez's quality inevitably attracts attention from across Europe. "He is an extraordinary player," the Atletico boss said. "There is interest from Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and other teams. But it is nothing we are concerned about."
