Tonali Transfer Saga: Arsenal Still Watching as Newcastle Star Questions Magpies Project

The Sandro Tonali transfer circus has produced more plot twists than a Netflix thriller, and Fabrizio Romano has attempted to cut through the noise with some clarity on where matters actually stand.

Tonali's representative Giuseppe Riso then poured water on the entire saga, telling Sky Sport Italia that no Arsenal discussions had taken place and that January departures were never realistic. He suggested March would be the appropriate time to assess the 25-year-old's position.

Now Romano has provided his assessment of the situation. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer expert acknowledged the confusion but confirmed that Arsenal absolutely remain in the picture for summer recruitment. He emphasised that attempting to complete such a deal in the final hours of the transfer window would have been farcical, given the complexity of moving a player of Tonali's calibre.

The window between February and April will prove crucial, Romano explained. During this period, Newcastle and their midfielder are expected to hold substantive conversations about his future. Juventus and other leading English clubs are also monitoring developments closely.

What adds intrigue to the situation is Tonali's apparent scepticism regarding Newcastle's trajectory. The Daily Mail has reported that the Italian international questions whether the club's project aligns with his sporting ambitions, particularly following a frustrating summer transfer window.

Tonali himself has previously acknowledged the reality of modern football. Speaking in November, he reflected on the year-by-year nature of career planning, noting that while he was currently content at St James' Park, footballers must remain open-minded about opportunities. He referenced the challenging summer that affected both himself and teammate Alexander Isak, suggesting such periods inevitably prompt reflection.
