Godts Warned Off Liverpool Move as Arsenal Circle Promising Ajax Talent

The race for Ajax's brightest young talent is heating up, but one respected voice is urging caution over a potential Liverpool switch.

Mika Godts, the 20-year-old Belgian forward, has caught the eye of both Liverpool and Arsenal this season with an impressive haul of 13 goals and eight assists across 22 Eredivisie outings. Such returns have drawn inevitable comparisons to countryman Eden Hazard, and the youngster remains locked into a contract running until 2029—meaning any suitor would need to dig deep into their pockets.

Yet Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has counselled against the Anfield route, fearing Godts' development could stall under current circumstances at the Merseyside club. "He's Ajax's best player right now," Driessen observed, though he wasn't entirely convinced by the Belgian's consistency, pointing to a wayward performance against NEC where Godts squandered a chance to seal victory for his side.

The fundamental concern, however, relates to Liverpool's trajectory this term. "You shouldn't put him at Liverpool now; that won't help either," Driessen suggested. "Cody Gakpo is struggling there, but you don't need to put him in that position now. He's not going to play much better than Gakpo."

It's a sobering assessment of life at Anfield under Arne Slot—and a reminder that mega-money moves don't always guarantee playing time or development.

Godts' representative, Niels de Jonck, has painted a different picture regarding the youngster's immediate future. Describing Arsenal's interest as "logical" given the statistics, de Jonck insisted that his client has other priorities for now. "Leaving Ajax was absolutely out of the question," he explained. "He has a major goal: to play at least 100 matches [he is now on 99]. He wants to be part of that club, so a transfer was out of the question anyway."

De Jonck remains convinced this is merely the prelude to something bigger down the line. "Together with Youri Baas, Godts should be Ajax's next mega transfer," he stated, adding that whilst Amsterdam's financial pressures have eased, the club wouldn't dismiss a substantial bid.

At just 20, Godts appears destined for a significant move eventually. Jose Mourinho certainly took notice when his Benfica side faced Ajax in the Champions League this season. "The left winger is really very good. He is dangerous. We tried to protect our right-back, especially on the inside, as Godts is dangerous," the Portuguese coach remarked.

For now though, all signs suggest the Ajax academy graduate will bide his time in the Eredivisie, chasing that century of appearances whilst top European clubs circle patiently.
