Arsenal Make Move for Tonali as Carrick's United Priority Slips Away

Arsenal are making their move for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, attempting to hijack what Manchester United manager Michael Carrick views as his priority midfield signing this summer.

The Gunners' sporting director Andrea Berta has initiated discussions with Newcastle over the Italian midfielder, with both clubs now in contact to explore the deal's structure and financial terms. It marks a significant intervention in United's transfer planning, just as the Red Devils deliberate their midfield reinforcements ahead of what promises to be a busy window.

United are expected to recruit two, possibly three central midfielders during the off-season. Atalanta's Ederson remains a target, though the club is still internally weighing whether to grant final approval. Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouameni represents something of a pipe dream, with reports from Spain suggesting a substantial offer has recently been tabled.

However, Carrick's heart is firmly set on Tonali. While Elliot Anderson ranks highly among the United hierarchy's preferences, the Newcastle man stands as the manager's undisputed first choice. The issue? Newcastle's asking price. Italian outlets value him at €100m (£86m), with some valuations stretching to €116m (£100m). Fabrizio Romano's assessment is blunt: United currently regard the cost as prohibitively expensive.

A complicating factor exists in Tonali's favour, however. There has long been understanding between Newcastle and the 26-year-old that a departure to a top-tier club would be permitted should the Magpies fail to secure Champions League football. Eddie Howe's side not only missed out on the Champions League but dropped out of European competition entirely, theoretically activating such an arrangement.

Mikel Arteta sees Tonali as a key piece in his next evolution. The Arsenal manager was notably frustrated by Manchester City's technical dominance during the League Cup final defeat, recognising that despite his side's Premier League title triumph, there remains room for improvement in controlling matches through superior midfield play. Tonali's technical quality would complement Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, offering the Gunners a more sophisticated approach to possession and progression.

Should Tonali arrive at the Emirates, Christian Norgaard appears destined for the exit door.
