Arteta Puts White on Barca's Radar as Arsenal Defender Eyes Spanish Switch

Ben White's Arsenal career appears to be at a crossroads, with manager Mikel Arteta having formally offered the 28-year-old defender to Barcelona, according to reports emerging from Spain.

The England international arrived at the Emirates for £50million back in 2021 and quickly won over the Gunners faithful with his displays at centre-back alongside Gabriel Magalhaes. His first campaign proved the investment worthwhile, establishing him as a cornerstone of Arsenal's defence.

White subsequently shifted to right-back during 2022/23, becoming an ever-present fixture as Arsenal pushed hard for the title before finishing runners-up in the Premier League. Those were the days when he looked like a cornerstone of the club's future.

However, his stock has waned considerably since Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori staked their claims as Arteta's preferred full-back options from the start of the 2024/25 campaign. White has found himself relegated largely to cup duty, with sporadic substitute appearances his lot of late. Recurring minor injuries have compounded his predicament, keeping him on the sidelines more regularly than his earlier Arsenal years would have suggested.

His reduced playing time has prompted Barcelona to circle. The Catalan outfit, currently top dogs in La Liga, view White as an ideal fit for their requirements—particularly given his capacity to operate as either a right-back or centre-back. Jules Kounde's recent dip in form has left Hansi Flick's side keen to explore alternatives.

Fichajes reports that Barcelona have earmarked White as a genuine target, with the club willing to examine the opportunity closely. Arteta has positioned himself as the driving force behind the potential deal, actively championing the move in discussions with the Spanish champions.

The financial figures appear workable. Barcelona rate White at €30million (£26.2m), a valuation Arsenal find acceptable given his reduced status in the pecking order. The defender himself is reportedly tempted by the prospect of a fresh challenge at Camp Nou.

White's technical qualities—his ball distribution, defensive positioning, and tactical intelligence—appeal to Barcelona's football philosophy. The club values his versatility, recognising that his skillset could prove invaluable in their system.

A summer transfer window switch appears plausible, with Barcelona potentially boasting €110million to spend. That figure has been pledged by presidential hopeful Marc Ciria, though incumbent Joan Laporta remains the frontrunner to retain his position.

Meanwhile, Barcelona's recruitment ambitions extend beyond Arsenal's ranks. Norwegian winger Andreas Schjelderup of Benfica has also caught the club's attention. Sporting director Deco is monitoring the 21-year-old's progress, viewing him as precisely the type of emerging talent capable of making an impact in the final third. Schjelderup possesses the pace and creativity Barcelona covet, though any deal would prove complicated—Benfica rarely negotiate from a position of weakness, and the player's market value has climbed substantially in recent months.
