Arsenal Chasing Roma's Franca as Right-Back Overhaul Looms

Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of a fresh face at right-back, with Roma's Wesley Franca emerging as a prime candidate to refresh the position. The Gunners' search has intensified following Ben White's peripheral role this term, with the England defender having started just five Premier League matches.

The club's hierarchy has decided White's time in north London is drawing to a close, and they're now actively hunting for an upgrade. Franca, the 22-year-old Brazilian, has caught their eye alongside other targets including Tino Livramento, Nnamdi Collins and Vanderson, but it's the Roma man who's captured Arsenal's 'significant' interest.

The young defender's athleticism, attacking prowess and defensive composure have all appealed to the Gunners' recruitment team. However, Franca is far from a one-club pursuit—Everton, Manchester City, Tottenham, Newcastle and Real Madrid are among those keeping close tabs on his progress.

Intriguingly, Franca's goal output this season has outshone that of Arsenal's primary right-back option. Timber made a sparkling start to the campaign, netting twice and providing an assist in the second game against Leeds, but has managed just one further league goal since, leaving him on three for the season. By contrast, Franca has notched four goals in Serie A, though his role differs somewhat from Timber's.

The Brazilian's versatility adds another layer of appeal. While he's featured at right-back, he's predominantly deployed as a wing-back, drifting across either flank depending on tactical requirements. Should he land at the Emirates, he'd offer Mikel Arteta options across the back line and in more advanced territory if needed.

Arsenal's defensive unit already boasts considerable positional flexibility, with Timber, White, Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori all capable of operating in multiple roles. Adding Franca would further bolster that adaptability.

The Brazilian is expected to attract substantial summer interest, but Arsenal are determined to win the race for his signature.
