Arsenal's Title Lead Under Threat as City Circles Marc Guehi; Smith Raises Pressure Question

Arsenal sit atop the Premier League table with a commanding six-point cushion over Manchester City after 21 fixtures, but there are growing concerns that the champions' winter recruitment could yet prove decisive in the title race.

The Gunners have assembled what many regard as the division's most formidable squad, their summer spending of around £250m having equipped them with genuine depth across all departments. Yet despite this investment, they were unable to break down Liverpool's stubborn resistance in a goalless stalemate on Thursday—though City's failure to capitalise on the opportunity means Arsenal's advantage remains intact.

Former Arsenal frontman Alan Smith, however, has sounded an alarm bell over City's transfer strategy. Speaking on the In the Mixer podcast, Smith expressed his unease at the prospect of the Manchester club strengthening their ranks with both Semenyo and Guehi.

"I'm a bit worried about Manchester City, bringing in Antoine Semenyo and if they can get Marc Guehi," Smith said. "I don't like that at all, because as City are at the moment, Arsenal are better in terms of their squad."

While acknowledging that the current state of play favours the north London side, Smith raised a thorny question about Arsenal's resilience. "If City are breathing down their necks with four or five games to go, how are Arsenal going to handle it?" he pondered. "That is one question."

Smith did express confidence that Arsenal possess the maturity to navigate such pressure, though he conceded that only time will tell if that proves true. "Arsenal are doing the necessary at the moment," he added. "But I do think Arsenal are mature enough now to be in that position and handle the pressure, but we will see."

The potential arrival of Guehi at the Etihad would represent a significant coup for Pep Guardiola's side. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes the Crystal Palace defender is likely to end up at City this month, given their defensive vulnerabilities.

"If Man City go for a player, they usually get him," Di Marzio explained. "They will make a good offer to Crystal Palace and Guehi. They can afford it."

Guehi's contractual situation has left him in an enviable position. With his current deal set to expire, he has attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Liverpool, among others. However, Di Marzio suggests that City's determination and financial firepower will prove decisive.

"Otherwise, he's free to wait for Bayern Munich or Liverpool. He's in the perfect position because he can ask for a big salary as he's free," Di Marzio noted. "If Man City says they want him, he will go."

The transfer specialist views the Guehi deal as potentially the marquee signing of the January window, eclipsing even Semenyo's move to Manchester. "I think this is the deal of January, after Semenyo to Man City. Guehi can be the biggest deal of the Premier League in this window," he concluded.
