Scholes Makes Bold Case for Timber Over Rice in Arsenal's Title Push

Paul Scholes has thrown down a provocative marker in the ongoing debate about Arsenal's standout performer this season, arguing that Jurrien Timber deserves more credit than the universally lauded Declan Rice.

The Manchester United legend's intervention comes at a pivotal moment for Mikel Arteta's side, who sit atop the Premier League table following three consecutive runner-up finishes. Arsenal's advantage narrowed to four points after Manchester City's victory over Wolves on Saturday, with the Gunners facing Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday.

Rice has attracted plaudits from pundits across the board, with many tipping the midfielder as the league's finest performer in the current campaign. Yet Scholes remains unconvinced by the consensus. Speaking on The Overlap's latest fan debate, the former midfielder questioned whether Rice truly merits the superlatives being heaped upon him.

"Has Declan Rice been that special this year?" Scholes mused. "I really like him, but I'm struggling to see that he is the best player in the league at this point."

The crux of Scholes' argument rests on Arsenal's defensive prowess. He contends that the Gunners' rearguard—specifically highlighting Timber—has wielded greater impact on proceedings than Rice's midfield contributions. "I think your defenders have probably had a bigger influence than Declan Rice," he explained. "I think Timber has been unbelievable. I think he has been brilliant."

Scholes stopped short of making sweeping comparisons with other midfielders, noting that he "couldn't say Zubimendi has been better than Rice or Rice has been better than Zubimendi."

Jamie Carragher has added his voice to the chorus of those questioning Arsenal's attacking output relative to their dominance. The former Liverpool defender expressed surprise that no Gunners forward has emerged as a standout performer despite the team's commanding league position.

Carragher revealed that when constructing his team of the season so far for Monday Night Football, he selected a front four of Erling Haaland, Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Morgan Rogers—with no Arsenal representative included.
