Richards Rips Arteta's Selection as Arsenal's Quadruple Dream Crumbles Against Southampton

Arsenal's bid for silverware has collapsed spectacularly. Following defeats to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and now Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals, talk of a quadruple has evaporated, leaving the north London side to salvage what they can from their season.

Micah Richards pulled no punches in his assessment, laying the blame squarely at Mikel Arteta's feet for selecting a makeshift XI. Speaking on BBC One, the former City defender insisted there could be no excuses for such a choice.

"You have to play your best team," Richards stated bluntly. "There is going to be so much noise around it. With Arsenal against Man City you can get beat in a final. Tonight, you asked me if I would play David Raya. I don't think it was anything to do with him in terms of them losing, but you have to play your best team."

The scale of Arsenal's recent collapse is stark. Mere weeks ago, the prospect of winning all four competitions seemed genuinely plausible. Now they're down to two, with Manchester City—fresh from dismantling Liverpool 4-0—looming as formidable obstacles in both the league and Europe.

What troubled Richards most, however, wasn't the tactical setup but the attitude on display. He acknowledged Arsenal's defensive solidity and transition play, yet their overall demeanour proved deeply unsatisfactory.

"The most disappointing thing for me was watching them and their attitude," he explained. "They have been excellent defensively, in transitions they have been very good, the shape has been good and the effort has been as good as anyone. For them to turn up the way they did today, I thought was very poor."

Alan Shearer offered a more damning verdict on Southampton's victory, suggesting there was nothing fortunate about it. "This is not a fluke," the Match of the Day pundit declared. "Victory went to the better side on the night."

Before the fixture, Shearer had warned of the psychological toll such a setback could inflict. "After Arsenal got knocked out of the FA Cup, it will be incredibly tough for them, mentally, to go on and achieve what they want to achieve," he told Betfair.

With the quadruple now a distant memory, Arsenal must regroup and demonstrate they possess the resilience to mount a genuine title challenge and make a dent in Europe. Right now, both remain far from assured.
