Mourinho's Madrid Shopping Spree Continues: Calafiori Next on the List?

Jose Mourinho is wasting no time overhauling Real Madrid's backline, and according to reports from Spanish journalists, the Portuguese boss has his sights set on Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori as his next target.
Fresh off a trophyless campaign marred by defensive lapses and internal discord, Real Madrid have turned to Mourinho to restore the club to its former glory. The rebuild has already begun in earnest, with Dani Carvajal and David Alaba departing on free transfers.
The first two signings are in the bag. Ibrahima Konate has joined on a free transfer after Liverpool and the centre-back parted ways on contract negotiations, while Denzel Dumfries arrived from Inter Milan for €20m after Madrid triggered his release clause. Both moves have received Fabrizio Romano's seal of approval.
Now Mourinho wants to complete his defensive overhaul with the Italian left-back-cum-centre-back, according to journalists Sergio Valentin and Ramon Alvarez de Mon. Valentin posted on X that when Mourinho outlined his defensive requirements upon taking the job, he listed "Dumfries, Konate, CALAFIORI" – in that order. De Mon added that the Real Madrid boss has specifically asked the club to explore the possibility of signing Calafiori, citing his tactical versatility as a key asset.
The 24-year-old cost Arsenal £42m when they recruited him from Bologna last summer and has become one of Mikel Arteta's most reliable defensive operators. Though competition from Piero Hincapie means he doesn't always start, Calafiori remains a valued member of the squad.
However, any Madrid hopes of landing the Italian face a significant hurdle. Arsenal have made it abundantly clear they have no interest in selling Calafiori this summer. The player is contracted until 2029, leaving the Gunners under no obligation to negotiate, and crucially, Calafiori has shown no signs of wanting to agitate for a move to Spain.
Mourinho's ruthless efficiency in tying up his first two targets may be cause for concern in north London, but the Arsenal hierarchy appears confident they can resist any approach from the Spanish giants.
