Redknapp Fumes Over Villa's Missed Chance as Everton's Barry Settles Merseyside Showdown

Aston Villa have nobody but themselves to blame after letting slip a chance to tighten the noose around Arsenal's neck, according to Jamie Redknapp, following Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Everton at home.

Thierno Barry's solitary strike proved decisive as David Moyes' side claimed three vital points and climbed to tenth in the Premier League with nine wins to their name. The result leaves Unai Emery's outfit – already without Manchester City's help after their Saturday loss to Manchester United – now sitting seven points behind the leaders rather than four.

Redknapp didn't mince his words in the aftermath, lamenting Villa's limp showing. "They couldn't have started any worse," he began. "Everton hit the post early on and you thought that might spark them into life, but then they lost John McGinn and they've blown an incredible opportunity to pile real pressure on Arsenal."

The pundit was particularly scathing about Villa's lack of cutting edge. "They didn't have the capabilities in any area today and the individuals who could get them out of trouble simply weren't performing. It was an absolutely gruelling afternoon – they never really got going at all. Perhaps there was some pressure weighing on them, and obviously they were without certain players."

Redknapp also questioned Villa's recruitment strategy, zeroing in on the decision to let Donyell Malen depart for Roma during the week. "That felt like a really peculiar call when you look at the options available on their bench," he explained. "Today, they simply didn't have those alternatives."

Yet the former Liverpool midfielder was full of praise for the opposition. "I've got to give David Moyes enormous credit," Redknapp continued. "He knows his trade – setting up a side that's genuinely difficult to break down. This is their finest result of the campaign."

Standout performers in Everton's victory included James Garner in midfield, Harrison Armstrong, and Jack Grealish, who maintained dangerous width throughout. "A magnificent showing from Moyes' outfit," Redknapp said. "For Villa, though, this one will sting for quite some time."

Garner himself reflected on the hard-fought nature of the contest post-match. "They're an excellent team with plenty of quality players," the midfielder noted. "We had to dig in today. We got our chance and we capitalised on it."

The Everton man outlined their tactical approach: "We focused on shutting down what makes them tick – their ability to move the ball through the middle. We closed off the passing lanes and forced them out wide. We stayed patient and took our moment when it arrived."

With the club having endured a difficult patch, Garner viewed the victory as a potential turning point. "We needed to climb out of that hole we'd dug ourselves into. Winning away from home – hopefully that's the start of something for us. It was a brilliant display from everyone involved."
