Arteta Eyes Madrid's Carreras as Arsenal Plan Left-Back Summer Raid

Mikel Arteta has set his sights on Real Madrid left-back Álvaro Carreras ahead of the summer transfer window, with indications that the Spanish defender is open to swapping the Bernabéu for the Emirates.

The Arsenal boss is understood to be an admirer of the 23-year-old and is keen to orchestrate a move, with Carreras himself increasingly receptive to the prospect. Reports suggest that Arteta's commitment to offering him genuine first-team opportunities has made the switch an attractive proposition from the player's perspective.

Arsenal's current left-back options include Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly, with Piero Hincapie capable of filling the role despite his primary position being centre-back. The Gunners are planning to convert Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent deal at season's end, yet the club appears determined to strengthen further in that area come summer.

Carreras arrived at Real Madrid last summer from Benfica for €50 million (£43.3 million) and has impressed in his maiden campaign, racking up 24 LaLiga starts plus two substitute appearances, along with nine Champions League outings. He represents Madrid's primary option at left-back, with Ferland Mendy battling injury concerns at 30 years old and Fran García, 26, likely to depart after nearly securing a move to Bournemouth in January.

Yet therein lies the rub. Real Madrid have little incentive to sell a defender they've invested significantly in and who has proven a shrewd acquisition. Carreras is earmarked as their long-term solution at left-back, and his performances this season suggest Los Blancos got it right. Shifting him so soon after his arrival would represent a surprising reversal of strategy from the Spanish giants.
