Arsenal Prepared to Move On From Norgaard After Disappointing First Season

Arsenal have signalled their willingness to part ways with Christian Norgaard this summer, marking a swift reversal of fortune for the defensive midfielder barely twelve months after his arrival at the Emirates.
The Dane touched down in north London last summer when the Gunners forked out £12million to secure his services from Brentford. Both Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta painted a rosy picture of the signing at the time, with the latter praising Norgaard's consistency and tactical nous, whilst the manager highlighted his international pedigree and leadership credentials.
Yet the reality on the pitch has told a rather different story. Norgaard has managed just a single Premier League start this season, with his Champions League appearances limited to three outings. The gap between expectation and execution has proven substantial.
According to reporting from The Athletic's James McNicholas and BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel, the club are now prepared to listen to offers for the midfielder. McNicholas noted that whilst Norgaard remains a "valued and influential member of the squad," his struggles for regular football in the top flight and Europe have forced Arsenal's hand.
The 32-year-old is contracted through summer 2027, with a further year's extension available, though that security appears unlikely to sway the hierarchy's thinking on his future.
A return to Danish football could beckon. Speaking to Bold back in October, Norgaard had suggested this very scenario, declaring: "I can guarantee that Arsenal will be my last club abroad. I still want to return to Brondby when my contract at Arsenal expires."
He added that whilst he'd be amenable to staying for the optional extra year should circumstances shift positively, he was equally pragmatic about the alternative: "If it turns out that it wasn't the right match, we'll go home to Denmark after two years."
That prophecy may now come to pass rather sooner than anticipated.
